How an EV charger installation works

  1. Site visit and load calculation

We check your panel, your service size and the route from the panel to where you park, and run a load calculation to confirm the charger fits your electrical system.

  2. Charger and circuit plan

We recommend the charger output and circuit size based on your vehicle and driving, and tell you whether your panel or service needs an upgrade or the charger should use load management.

  3. Permit and installation

We file the permit, install the dedicated circuit and the charger, and test everything before handover.

  4. Inspection and handover

After the inspection, we make sure the charger is working with your vehicle and show you how to use its settings.

Home, workplace and multi-unit charging

Most home charging uses a Level 2 charger on a dedicated 240-volt circuit, which can usually refill a battery overnight for typical daily driving. Older Long Island homes with 100-amp service may need a panel or service upgrade first, or a charger set to a lower output. The load calculation shows which makes sense.

Commercial and multi-unit projects need more planning: how many ports to install now and how many later, where to run conduit, how chargers share the available capacity, and which parking spaces to equip. Planning for future ports during the first installation usually costs far less than trenching again later.

Incentives change often. PSEG Long Island offers programs for residential chargers and for the electrical infrastructure behind commercial chargers, and NYSERDA’s Charge Ready NY 2.0 supports Level 2 charging at eligible workplaces, multifamily buildings and hotels. The federal charger tax credit does not apply to equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026. We confirm what applies to your project when we plan it.

Questions

EV charging installations FAQ

How long does it take to charge at home with a Level 2 charger?

It depends on your battery size, the charger’s output, your car’s onboard charger and how low the battery is. For typical daily driving, a Level 2 charger can usually refill the battery overnight.

Will I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always. Many homes have enough capacity, and some chargers can be set to a lower output or paired with load management. If your service is already near its limit, a panel or service upgrade may be the better long-term fix. A load calculation answers the question.

Which EV chargers do you install?

We install Level 2 chargers from major manufacturers, including Tesla Wall Connectors and ChargePoint units, as well as universal J1772 equipment.

Are there rebates for EV chargers on Long Island?

Often. PSEG Long Island runs programs for residential chargers and for commercial charging infrastructure, and NYSERDA’s Charge Ready NY 2.0 covers eligible workplaces, multifamily buildings and hotels. Eligibility depends on the property and the project, and we check what applies when we plan the installation.

Can you install chargers for a business or apartment building?

Yes. We design and install charging for workplaces, retail locations, parking areas and multi-unit residential buildings, including planning for future expansion.
